The Poles scowl at the Poles

Filed under: Poles in UK&EU — Administrator @ 11:53 am

The first piece of advice given to the Pole coming to Great Britain is: ‘’Don’t trust your compatriots’’. Just after that he is fed with all stories about Polish swindlers, iceberg slims and thieves who try to take from Polish people as much as it is possible. Following that pattern, well-informed Pole, keeps repeating the same advice to others. That is the way the new immigration tradition is born.

‘’Just go to work and you will see’’- these are the most important words heard by the new comers who comment on the ads in one of the Polish newspapers and want to share their happiness with the neighbours. All these are followed by the tales about adventures  with work for Polish people. The stories are almost the same: Polish employer has not paid for two months, he plays the role of the most clever man and he asks Poles to work for nothing 10 hours per day.

‘’I don’t have great experience (I just perform small jobs for the clients from London), but I can prompt something’’, Lucas admits  at the beginning of his story of life and work in the UK in the field of computer graphics. Apart from receiving some information about sending cv from Poland, looking for accommodation, confirmation of address and setting the account there is still at least one piece of sacramental warnings-‘’Stay away from the Poles. If you have any contacts with them, they will offer you help in accomplishing formalities, finding work, just pretend,  let’s say, you are Welsh or Swede. It would be good for you’’, the immigrant says with few months of ‘’experience’’ in Great Britain. These kinds of stories are followed by others such as about ruthless thieves, fake helpers, who only care about their business, who want to trip somebody up. There are also examples of mockery and contempt shown by the ‘’new generation’’of Poles towards newcomers.

‘’We got used to such a situation so much that we even do not try to change anything’’, Adrian says, a student from Warsaw who has been working in London for 2 years.

Conflict between dreams and reality

The average Pole who does not speak any English, without any friends, family or contacts is like a child in the fog. The example may be Christopher who came to London with his brother-in-law a year ago.

‘’We’ve just arrived from the airport to Victoria station and we had no ideas what to do next’’, they say. While staying in Poland they found a room in Brixton. ‘’To be honest we even did not know where it was. As we have heard that transport is so expensive, we decided to go to Brixton on foot with luggage. I think we made 30 kilometres but we got to the place. The first job we took was offered by the Pole’’. Now they all can confirm that saying The Poles scowl at the Poles  is true .

However, from the Polish employers’ point of view the reality looks a bit different. ‘’Anybody who comes to Great Britain, usually imagine that he will get good job immediately’’, the owner of the small company says. He deals with car fixing. ‘’They have no idea that, first of all, there must be a lot of legal things sorted before starting work to make their staying and employment legal. After some time Polish people realize that their expectations depart from the reality and you need to live. Then illegal work for 5 pounds per hour appears to be not so bad. But as soon as they manage to overcome all the problems and find better job, they start complaining about being used by the Poles in the past. They even wouldn’t think that they survived thanks to bad Polish people ’’.

The islands of solidarity

Although Polish image about the Poles seems to be invariable, there are also some islands of incredible solidarity within our society. One of the great examples is the activity of Mariusz Lubowiecki who has developed the possibility to contact Polish ( not only ) specialists with customers and it is very difficult to find any transparent business in what he is doing. ‘’I don’t run any recruitment agency, I do it completely for free and unselfishly, Lubowiecki convinces.’’ I just realize how difficult is to start earning money just after arriving to the UK. I hit on the idea to launch the service which lets to start somewhere and find commission for good beginning.

His activity is based on applications of employees who offer their services and clients’ requirements, who are looking for the specialists e.g. for refurbishment,  website developers or baby-sitters. Anybody who needs a specialist, passes all the details of the order and place his address on the website www.polishstaff.co.uk . The administrator ( that is Mariusz Lubowiecki) sends them via text message or e-mail to three subcontractors who are just within the nearest area. Then specialists get in touch with the clients and arrange the costs and time.

‘’There are over 500 of such subcontractors’’, the initiator of the website says. We just create a kind of society of mutual cooperation, we are in constant contact, helping each others. I just hope we will develop such an idea’’.

Lubowiecki will not change our attitude. But his example may influence others.

‘’I got to know few people who offer their help for new comers frankly and openly, one of the internauts says on Polish-Scottish websites. And it was not only offering but they really helped me. I felt it so deeply so that I have also sent few announcements with my willingness to help other Polish people (of course within bounds of possibility).

The cost of building ground got crazy because of Euro 2012

According to analysts, the growth of value of building grounds is temporary and anybody who is about to purchase the land should wait through this fever.

Within few days, just after announcing Poland as one of the host nations of EURO 2012, the price of building ground near Wroclaw jumped to 20 per cent.

The growth of the value mainly concerns the grounds intended for investments. The vendors count on the fact that there are companies, connected with EURO, which will be willing to build e.g. new hotels. However, according to the president of WGN, investors being interested in the plots should wait through temporary fever, as sooner or later the cost of these grounds will be cut down to the current level.
”The prices of the grounds may raise as these are underestimated grounds, not because of EURO-Mr Michniak claims.

Also Marta Kosinska, the analyst of the website service fast.pl thinks that if there is somebody who puts up the prices of the flat in connection with EURO, that is just speculation. ”There are no investments connectd with EURO as yet so there are no reasons to change anything regarding the prices”, she underscores.

Is it more expensive locally or throughout the country?

Most of the specialists expect that the value of properties will be growing up faster as the result of EURO 2012, but it will be more local phenomenon. It will  more concern the cities in which the tournament will take place. ”The value of houses, plots and other properties where the investment is connected with infrastructure of EURO 2012 will grow up. In Warsaw such a growth is expected in the area of second underground connection and ringroads which will improve communication between Warsaw and nearby areas. That is where the prices of ground will undoubtedly raise”, Mr Marcin Drogomirecki, from oferty.net expects.
The other thing is that people who will be buying estates on the purpose of investment may also contribute to the growth of the prices of the host cities. These areas will become more attractive. However, the size of these changes will not reach that level as  in Barcelona before the Olympics in 1992. Within 6 years, before the event, the value of the properties there raised by 200 per cent.

The raise of the prices will not stop

Some analysts expect that championship will influence the whole market. It will result in increased demand for building materials and workers with whom there is already quite a big problem. It may cause   the growth of the cost of development investors what will eventually be shifted onto the customer. ” EURO rejects the chance of fast growth of the number of flats as the building companies are more in charge of infrastructural investments. These contracts  will be more lucrative”, Marta Kosińska admits.

There are also people who pay attention to the mechanism of self-fulfilling prediction. As people believe it will be more expensive it will happen so. Above all, properties will be more expensive as the market is led by the system of supply and demand. Looking at the current number of being built flats-in the first term of 2007, according to Central Statistical Office  there were 26,700 new pieces of accomodation, which is 5 per cent less than a year ago-supply will not fulfill the need for new flats. ”The newest ideas of building flats by incorporated enterprise of Ministry of Treasure will not solve these problems”, Marta admits.

The shortage of building materials has already commenced….

Building boom started to become a rocky ground. The investors who are about to build houses have to register themselves on the waiting list in order to get hollow bricks, mineral wool or tiles. Unfortuanately, such a situation does not seem to get better.

The number of buildings will be increasing at a quick pace and the companies producing building materials do not want to invest in production uprating as they are aleady afraid of a sudden end of the prosperity.

If the largest development companies have problems to purchase building materials, it means the market is falling down. According to the latest news, the biggest difficulties concern purchasing of building ceramics, that is material to build walls.

However, individual investors are in much worse position at the moment. ”It seemed to me that I was preventive so as in fear of lack of builders I managed to organize the team in autumn. What for, if I cannot get all materials needed for work, and these which are available are expensive by half comparing to last season”, Mr Miroslaw Kobielski says. He is currently building the single-family house near Gorzow Wielkopolski.

Such a situation does not seem to get more stabilized. According to Central Statistical Office (GUS), building production was increased by 75 per cent in February (annual depiction) in Poland-so the number of material buyers is building up. In this regard, Poland is a leader amongst other countries within European Union. What is more we can keep the leadership for the next few years. There are some reasons for that. Firstly, the number of building permit has increased in a noticable way. Last year there was 45% more permit comparing to 2005. It means that demand for building materials will be still growing.

Such a requirement will be extremely increased by the giant infrastructural investments as they are to be be partly funded by EU. The investments are said to appear in a quick pace just after granting the priority to organize 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. As the result the lack of building materials will be more raging in one year time.

The situation can get calmer if the supply gets bigger, but at the moment nothing looks like improvement. According to the latest research conducted by Central Statistical Office, the value of investment expenditure in the group of products from remaining non-metalic raw materials, which includes inter alia producers of cement, bricks and hollow bricks, decreased by 10 per cent. ”There are a lot of closed brickyard and it is worth getting them off the ground. We are trying to encourage producers of building materials to speed the investment up. So far without any results, Mr Piotr Styczen, Undersecretary of Construction Department says.

Mr Ryszard Kowalski, the Chairman of Employers’ Association (Producers of materials for building) claims that there are quite a lot of investments in some building sectors. ”The investments are usually among producers of materials which are easy to export”, he adds. That is why there are new factories producing tiles, bathroom fixture and glue for glazing.

Producers of hollow bricks or aggregates, which export is unprofitable because of high cost of transport, are condemned to Polish market only. They are also afraid that boom in building sector will finish as fast as it has started. ”We are not sure how long this madness will last”, Mr Ryszard Kowalski adds.

However, according to Maciej Gnoinski, such fears are unfounded. ”To catch up with European standards, there should be 0.5 millions apartments appearing every year within next two decades. The boom of building will last for many years”-the member of J.W. Construction board of directors announces. If the producers does not start to invest, the shortage of building materials will intensify and it will slow the speed of investmnt accomplishment. Undoubtedly, it would be economy that loses the most.

Euro 2012

2012 UEFA European Football Championship is a very profitable event. Poland and Ukraine gainings from being host nations are difficult to foresee. Undoubtedly, as Cracow newspaper admits that profit will be very high.

These are few examples of the countries which got benefit from organizing European Football Championship:

In 1992, Sweden-39 mln euros< br/> ·During EURO 1996, English football pitches -141 mln euros< br/> ·During European Championship in Belgium and Holland, 2000-221 mln euros< br/> ·Tournament in Portugal, three years ago, brought profit of 839 mln euros< br/>The record breaking sum of money will also appear considering the rights for broadcasting.

In case of EURO 2008, which will take place on the Austrian and Swiss stadiums, the cost of broadcasting has already come to 680 mln euros, and according to the latest estimates, to buy the rights to broadcast the tournaments in Poland and Ukraine, approximately 1 milliard must be taken into consideration-Mr Olkowicz says.
